Internet Safety: Understanding the App Store As students download apps, it is important that you and your child understand some basic information about the app. We have discussed in library this week that it is important that your child asks a teacher before downloading any app onto their school device. We explored making an informed choice about downloading an application. Before downloading a device and clicking the “Get” button, there are few pieces of information to consider. Just like you would not invite someone you did not know into your home, we would not invite an app onto our iPad about which we knew nothing! As students have personal devices at home, you may be wondering you can make an informed decision on whether this app is a good fit for your child. Here are few important pieces of information to consider using a picture of an app called “Miitomo”:
2) What is the rating? The rating for the app is based on two factors: content and privacy. It is important to consider what is in the app and if it’s a good fit for your child. 3) Does the app have in-app purchases? Be aware of what in-app purchases are available on the app. It may be important to understand how they work before having your child downloading them because accidental purchases can be expensive. 4) Does it use personal information? You can continue to find out what personal information the app uses in the privacy policy. Or it might be wise for you as the parent to “test drive” and help your student set up the app before they use it to ensure that students are not using their real personal information. It is important that only with parent permission should students EVER give out personal information! Using these four steps will help you understand if the app is a right fit for your child. If you’re not comfortable with an app or if you feel that an app is trying to collect information from your child, you have the ability to delete it at any time!

Today's Focus: Personal Information on the Internet
In the library, we have focused on teaching students the importance about not sharing personal information about themselves or others on apps, message boards, etc. It is important that your child is aware of what personal information is as well as when it is acceptable to provide this information. As a parent it is important to continually discuss with your child what information they should share online and when they should share it. Students should only be providing or posting ANY personal information with parent's permission. Personal Information Includes: * First & Last Name * Location * Photos of themselves & others * Birthdays * Phone Numbers * Apple IDs for Text Messaging * E-mail Addresses * Any Identifiable Information for your Child Please continue to have conversations and sit down with your child about the apps they are using and the importance of being safe on the internet. Here are some resources to help teach your child more about personal information: https://youtu.be/vUO7t92k4Xg (Grades K-2) https://youtu.be/jJdHKqs_pi8 (Grades 2-5) Please look forward to more tips about internet safety and digital citizenship next week! |
